The Baroness Emmuska Orczy pioneered the "hero in disguise" ruse so often played out today by the likes of Superman or Spiderman - regular men who blend in by day thanks to disguises and perform daring feats by night, their true identity masked or cloaked in mystery. Set during the French Revolution, the eponymous Scarlet Pimpernel is an English baron living abroad and leading the charge to save his French counterparts before they are guillotined during the Reign of Terror. The Baroness's wonderfully addicting story, published in 1905, has received numerous adaptations, including a wildly popular Broadway musical.
