+ Want to read

Prayers from the Ark is Rumer Godden's translation of Carmen Bernos de Gasztold's 27 poems, originally published in the French in two volumes: Le Mieux Aime (1947) and Prieres dans l'Arche (1955). Each poem is a short dramatic monologue in the voice of one of the inhabitants of the Biblical Ark — Noah, the goldfish, the elephant, the dove — speaking to God. Each prayer is accompanied by an illustration of the animal, drawn by Jean Primrose.
