James Clavell Library: Gai-Jin, Tai-Pan, Noble House, & Shogun

Asian Saga: Publication Order seriesNext:Whirlwind(1986) →

This collection brings together four novels by James Clavell that share a single sweeping world, the Asian Saga. Shogun opens in feudal Japan at the start of the seventeenth century, when an English navigator washes ashore and is drawn into the rivalries of warring lords. Tai-Pan turns to Hong Kong in the early years of British trading, where a Scottish merchant battles rivals for control of the trade. Noble House moves to the colony in the 1960s, following a trading dynasty through a financial struggle. Gai-Jin returns to Japan in the 1860s, as foreign traders and diplomats press against a country that wants them gone. Each book stands alone, but read together they form a long family and business history across centuries.
