Mondrian

This book introduces Piet Mondrian, the Dutch painter who lived from 1872 to 1944. Early on he produced landscapes in a loose, Impressionist manner, yet even those canvases hint at the straight vertical and horizontal lines that would later define his art. Exposure to Cubism shaped his development, and in 1912 he relocated to Paris, where he kept refining his approach and testing ever more considered arrangements.

Mondrian aimed for a language that could speak to everyone, stripping shapes and hues down to their most basic elements. He called this approach Neo-Plasticism. His best-known pictures feature a pale background crossed by black grid lines and filled with the three primary colors.
