When Finding Serenity appeared, Firefly fans had plenty to discuss, and this follow-up keeps the conversation going. Its essays look past the television series to the events of the Serenity film, from River's hidden past to Captain Mal's struggle against the Alliance and the devoted fans who rallied to bring the crew back to the screen. Contributors consider the show's treatment of women, arguing that its female characters carry as much weight as its gunfights. Other pieces treat the series as a model for online game worlds, examine how its visual effects were designed, and read the story as a meditation on how media shapes and frees its audience. The collection closes with a personal appreciation of Mal and the ship he calls home, written by the actor who played him. Taken together, the essays make a lively, thoughtful companion for anyone who loves the Whedonverse.
