The Birthmark and Other Stories

by Nathaniel Hawthorne · 1843

+ Want to read

Aylmer is a learned man who loves his wife Georgiana deeply, but one feature troubles him: a small birthmark on her cheek, shaped like a tiny hand. As the mark becomes an obsession in his mind, he is sure that his skill as a man of science can remove it and make her flawless. Georgiana agrees to let him try. Their marriage now rests on a question about how far love can bend toward ambition, and whether a person can ever be perfect. This short tale sets a pale, ideal wife against a husband determined to reshape her.
