When the housekeeper leaves the house to take part in a baking competition, a babysitter named Miss Penalty is left in charge. Toad Persever, however, has a magic kit close at hand, and he decides to use it to get rid of her. The story is a light children's fantasy built on a simple idea: a bit of conjuring set against a stern sitter. Its humour and mischief come from the small, clever ways the magic is used. Young readers who enjoy playful trickery and the thrill of a secret magic set will find it easy to follow and enjoy.
