Keep Sweet collects the voices of people who were raised in polygamous communities linked to the fundamentalist Mormon church. Told largely in their own words, the accounts describe daily life in a closed society where large families, strict rules and obedience to a religious leader shaped childhood. Many of the contributors describe being moved between households, the pressure to marry young and the difficulty of leaving the only world they had known. The book looks at what these children lost and endured, and how some of them went on to build new lives outside the community. It is a record of growing up inside a tightly controlled faith and of the lasting effects that upbringing could have.
