Alana, his seventeen-year-old daughter, doesn't make it very easy either. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder and still struggling with abandonment issues after her own mother left the family, Alana enjoys arguing with any woman Payton becomes close to.

This includes Cassie, the new woman Payton is falling in love with. But Cassie has a sick child of her own, and is understanding of Alana and her issues. Things look hopeful for the couple, until Alana's mother shows up after seventeen years, and Alana's mental health takes a turn for the worse. To confuse matters even more, Cassie and Payton are now receiving death threats from a mysterious stranger. Not until the tragic ending is the stranger's true identity revealed.
