Cynics

Cynics is a novel by Anatoly Mariengof, set in Moscow in the years after the revolution. It follows a circle of young poets and artists who style themselves as cynics, refusing to take the new order's solemn promises at face value. Their days pass in cafés, drinking, quarrels and love affairs, while the city changes around them. Mariengof, a member of the avant-garde Imagist group, draws the scene with a sharp and bitter wit, and many readers see in its characters a portrait of the literary world he knew. The book is a record of a generation caught between artistic freedom and political pressure.
