The Philosophy of Eros and European Art

This interdisciplinary study deals with the interaction between philosophy and the visual arts. It presents the long tradition of the theory of love and its interpretation in European art. The special focus is on the Neoplatonic school and its influence on Renaissance art, but the book also provides a view of the whole history of European art. This study, based on the synthesis of history and theory, involves a critical approach to contemporary theories of love and sexuality, including Herbert Marcuse, Julia Kristeva, and Michel Foucault.
