Henriette let neither disapproval nor disbelief daunt her. In an astonishingly short fifteen-day period, she hatched her plan, organized provisions, and hired her retinue.
Throughout her adventure, Henriette kept a diary. She was a sharp-eyed observer, as conscious of the human drama she had set in train as the difficulties and beauties of the climb itself. Her courage and down-to-earth humor illuminate every page of her story, impressive today but almost incredible in 1838. Her own character is as intriguing as the legendary mountain she conquered.
