Douglas Southall Freeman's three-volume study, written during the early 1940s, examines the generals who served under Robert E. Lee in the Confederate army. Freeman blends military strategy, biography and Civil War history to show how armies really function and how commanders make decisions. This second volume follows the careers of Lee's subordinates, looking closely at their judgement and their conduct on the battlefield. Appearing while the United States was fighting another world war, the book influenced American military leaders and strategists. It also established Freeman as a leading military historian of his day.
