The Prey series follows Lucas Davenport, a Minnesota police investigator with a sharp wit and a restless streak, through a long run of murder cases. Each book is built around a new crime: a killer hiding in plain sight, a string of victims the police cannot yet link, or a case that becomes personal fast.

Davenport works with a rotating cast of detectives and specialists, and the books move quickly from crime scene to suspect interview to the slow, stubborn work of building a case. Sandford writes in a brisk, wry style, with plenty of dialogue and a steady sense of danger. Readers come for the investigations, the banter, and a hero who is as likely to bend a rule as to keep one.
