Eight Days in September

This insider's account covers the eight tense days in September 2008 when Thabo Mbeki was forced out of the South African presidency. Frank Chikane, who then ran the cabinet and the presidential office, had to oversee the handover first to Kgalema Motlanthe and then to Jacob Zuma, and he watched the drama unfold at close range. The book grows out of a set of controversial newspaper pieces Chikane published in 2010, expanding on them to explain the period from the inside. It also considers how history should judge Mbeki's time in office, offering a look at a turbulent chapter in the country's recent past.
