An Inconvenient Year

Yvonne Joye's account looks at cancer from the perspective of someone who is a mother, a partner and a friend. It explores the uncertainty of waiting for news, the reactions of people around her, and the struggle to live alongside them. The diagnosis brings shock and fear, and the decision to accept treatment, with all its hardships, is made in order to survive. Losing hair and the quieter loss of femininity are confronted directly. Beneath the fear and anger, though, runs a thread of humour and laughter, which gives the story its warmth.
