In 1192, Roane Garr, a knight of the Hospitaller order, is struck by lightning at a holy site in Jerusalem and wakes with an unexpected gift for healing. His brethren see the power as heresy and demand his death, so he goes into hiding in England while a price is set on his head. Lady Alisanne de Soulant, whose sight is slowly failing, is pressed into service by hired hunters who hold her father hostage. She must lure Roane from concealment, and when guilt and a growing attraction lead her to help him slip free, she finds herself caught and punished.

The pursuers soon learn that Roane has fallen for the woman they once used to draw him out, and they turn her against him once more. When he is taken while trying to rescue her, the task falls to Alisanne, her father, and an unlikely band of companions to free him before the Hospitallers can have him killed.
