Bishop has settled into a quiet life as a rancher in the aftermath of a collapse, raising his family far from the crowds. After a long recovery, though, he finds that the world has changed in ways he has not kept up with, and he feels like a stranger in it. Trouble arrives from the west, the most serious threat the Alliance has faced: a danger that could undo the community's experiment in self-reliance. Bishop and his wife Terri want nothing more than to be left alone, yet the Alliance leaders, acting with good intentions, struggle to contain the danger, and their efforts only push society closer to another breakdown. As friends are endangered and war gathers on the horizon, the couple are pulled into a fast-moving adventure that tests their skills, their judgment and their bond.
