When Justinia and Julius meet at an NAACP convention, they defy family and societal expectations and change each other's lives forever. Their story, told in alternating viewpoints with insightful with and humor, reveals their experiences involving race and class and sacrifices they make while living and surviving the turbulent 1930s.
