Much of the book is devoted to the call to holiness, the basis on which the people of Israel are asked to live apart and to reflect God's character. Its laws on justice, care for the poor and the sabbath year remain among the best known passages of the Old Testament. This edition presents the English Standard Version text of the book in a short, portable form.
