Wooden Leg: A Warrior Who Fought Custer

Most accounts of Custer's defeat at the Little Bighorn come from the other side, since no white soldier survived to tell it. In 1922 the writer Thomas B. Marquis set out to hear the story from a Cheyenne man who had fought there. Over many hours he listened to Wooden Leg, who had been a young man during the battle, and assembled his recollections. The memoir reaches well beyond the final clash. Wooden Leg describes daily Cheyenne life: how people hunted, quarrelled with the Crow, received their names, practised their faith and arranged marriages. He also explains how the tribes came together in a loose alliance against the pressures bearing down on them. Though they won that battle, the wider war was lost, and the later chapters show the hard years on the reservation and the longing for the open plains.
