In a ruined city of the dead, far from any living society, a boy named Will has grown up. He has no memory of anywhere else, and he is raised by three undead companions: Blood, a sturdy skeletal fighter; Mary, a mummified priestess; and Gus, a bad-tempered ghostly mage. They fill his days with affection and pass on everything they know. Then Will begins to ask who he really is.

To answer that, he must uncover the secrets of this forgotten land and the pasts of the undead who live there. He will meet the kindness of the gods who watch over the living and the cruelty of those who corrupt them. When he has learned enough, he will take his first step toward becoming a paladin.
The story is framed as a promise made by his guardians: they will explain everything, however long it takes, and tell him how the heroes of the past died and why he was raised in this place.
