Amy Lynn Beck has had a rough start. She escaped an abusive marriage and is struggling in a shabby flat with poor work prospects. When she is offered a live-in nanny post for the young daughter of Jackson Ritter, a wealthy bestselling novelist, she sees a chance at something better. Jackson, though, is a widowed single father with a publisher pressing him and a manuscript he cannot finish. He hopes the new nanny will ease his burden, but the attraction between them grows quickly, and Amy worries about crossing a line she has promised herself she won't cross. Jackson, for his part, wonders whether she could become more than someone to look after his daughter. The story alternates between their two perspectives as they wrestle with desire, guilt and an old threat that refuses to go away.
