The narrative falls into four parts. The first introduces the region as it stood at the time of writing, along with its sources and its prehistoric and early history. The second covers the ancient era, from legendary rulers until the breakup of the old kingdom of Kamarupa at the close of the twelfth century. The third follows the medieval period, when tribal states arose from its ruins, up to the collapse of the Ahom monarchy in 1826. The final part examines British rule and the years leading to independence in 1947, with a brief look at what followed. Notes, a bibliography, glossary and index support the text.
