After an alien invasion, Earth brought the violence under control, and engineers turned to the Moon to build ships able to fight back. The Lunar Colony, cleared of the dead, became a technology hub that mines asteroids for materials. Calliope Morrigan arrives there to finish the designs for her own vessel. The military doubts her small craft and backs Mattias, who promises something far larger that would need fusion power, still out of reach. Arn Lasserman, who leads nuclear engineering, joins Calliope to build a stronger ship around engines he designed, and her rivals grow more hostile. As her ship nears completion, the threats against her intensify. Competition over materials, computing time and engines grows fiercer as probes reach farther into the solar system. Then a nest of aliens is found close enough to strike without warning. Humanity's survival hangs in the balance, and Calliope must forge crucial alliances and push technology to its limits.
