In the first, Justin answers accusations made against Christians and explains their beliefs and worship to the emperor and his court. The second takes up the punishment of Christians for the name they bear alone and responds to the charges brought against them. Together the texts offer a window onto how believers argued for their place in a hostile empire and how they framed their teaching in terms outsiders might understand.
