Macy Anderson is out buying groceries one ordinary afternoon when her world turns upside down. Macy's first concern is her two young boys. She has to work out how to keep them from catching an illness that spreads as easily as a single breath. Scientists, including a researcher named Charles Kimble, are the best hope for a cure, but the outbreak is moving faster than anyone can respond.
As the disease spreads, authorities set up quarantines and internment camps, and cities are sealed off. Order and government begin to fall apart, and ordinary people must fend for themselves. The question at the centre of the story is whether one mother can protect her children, and whether humanity can endure until the illness fades.
